Let the blogging begin....

So the land of blogging...here goes nothing!

I am currently in my final year at the University of Chichester studying Fine Art.
My art......well it has become all about me :)

It started in my second year of uni when the tutor in my paint workshop said..'paint 6 things that remind you of you summer, 3 good and 3 bad' in the bad section i painted letters overlaid on themselves due to my camp america experience in summer 07 where i would rant in my diary but overlay the text so that the children could not read it.
Little did i know that this would lead into a whole realm of paintings in the following 2 years.

From there i used this idea in my studio practice as well as my painting workshop creating a range of different pieces containing overlaid text. Here are some examples....

Initially i used different photocopies of documents from my camp america experience and overlaid text around them in different ways. My work then developed into paintings in acylic as seen above and i used 2 sheets of perspex and wrote all over them creating even more layers of illegible text.

The following semester took me to exploring oil paint and i created paintings that used less and less words, for example this piece:

The top painting contains the word YES where the canvas is rotated and the word yes is written 4 different ways. The bottom canvas is the same process but with the word NO.
These were the last pieces of work that i made in my second year and lead me through to my work in the 3rd year.
I continued to develop my ideas when beginning the 3rd year particularly looking at placing words that are binary opposites together on the one canvas. To begin with i painted the Robert indiana LOVE print onto the canvas then placed HATE over the top...like so...

The heaviness of the thick paint used to outline hate did not work very well so i proceeded to make another version this time using the same text for both rather than Robert Indiana's style with my own on top:

The font used for the text in this painting is Times New Roman.

Following on from this piece I created these 2 paintings:

The top painting is ME painted in acrylic with YOU overlaid in thinned down oil paint. The bottom painting is YOU painted in acrylic with ME overlaid in thinned down oil paint.
